Medicare Advantage plans offer an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, combining hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage into a single plan.
At Retire With Medicare, we help you understand how Medicare Advantage works, what it covers, and whether it’s the right fit for your retirement healthcare needs.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include:
Medicare Part A (hospital coverage)
Medicare Part B (medical coverage)
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Annual out-of-pocket maximum
Extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare
Common additional benefits may include:
Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
Fitness and wellness programs
Preventive care and care coordination
Telehealth services
Medicare Advantage plans come in different formats, each with its own rules:
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
Requires in-network providers
Referrals needed for specialists
Typically lower premiums and costs
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
Allows out-of-network care at a higher cost
No referrals required
More flexibility than HMOs
Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
Designed for individuals with specific conditions or circumstances
Tailored benefits and provider networks
Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS)
Allows you to see providers who accept the plan’s payment terms
Less common today

When enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan:
You still pay your Part B premium
You may pay an additional plan premium (many plans are $0)
You use the plan’s provider network
The plan sets copayments and coinsurance amounts
Plans renew annually and can change benefits, networks, and costs each year.

Costs may include:
Monthly plan premium
Copays for doctor visits and services
Prescription drug costs
Annual out-of-pocket maximum
The out-of-pocket maximum provides financial protection, which Original Medicare does not offer on its own.

Medicare Advantage may be a good fit if you:
Prefer bundled coverage in one plan
Are comfortable using provider networks
Want additional benefits like dental or vision
Like having a cap on annual medical costs
Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B
Live in the plan’s service area
Initial Enrollment Period
Annual Open Enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7)
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan 1 – Mar 31)
Special Enrollment Periods (if eligible)
